Itchy Skin Conditions to Make You Itch
from: Cosmetics Center Skin Conditions GuideItchy skin conditions make us very uncomfortable especially when we don't know what is causing them. Itchy skin, which is also known as pruritus, can be caused by hundreds of things. It can come from a rash or insect bite or some other skin condition such as dermatitis or psoriasis. Many aren't aware of this by itchy skin conditions may also be the result of an internal problem such as kidney or liver disease. With internal diseases, your skin may appear to look very normal, but it will itch.
Other itchy skin conditions may be accompanied by rough skin, blisters, bumps or redness. The best way to get lasting treatment for your itchy skin is to determine the exact cause. Because they can be caused by so many things, sometimes it's difficult for doctors to determine the exact cause without in-depth testing.
Some treatments doctors may recommend for itchy skin conditions are therapy, wet dressings, medications, cool baths and anti-itch medications, both over-the-counter and prescription. Many of the treatment methods are multi-function, meaning they can be used for a variety of different types of itchy skin conditions. Doctors will often prescribe these at first to see if they work on the patient to save the patient money on unnecessary testing.
Eczema is an itchy skin condition that can affect adults or children. When it affects children, it's referred to as childhood eczema or atopic eczema. Childhood eczema is a hereditary condition that affects many babies. The skin of eczema patients is inflamed, irritated, and well as very itchy. It will usually show up on the inner creases of the knees and elbows in young children and on the neck or face of babies. As itchy as it makes them, they are discouraged to not scratch as this can tear the skin and cause bleeding and infection.
Although eczema is not from an allergy, patients that have eczema often have very sensitive skin that has allergic reactions to many household pollens, dust, mold, etc.
Other itchy skin conditions are psoriasis, dandruff or scalp psoriasis. Scalp psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder where the skin cells grow and produce up to six times faster than normal. In addition, they shed in a matter of days rather than weeks, which is the normal time. When this happens on the scalp, pink patches appear followed by scaly skin. Scalp psoriasis is a hereditary condition that can affect us at any age, but it most often between the ages of 10 and 30. Doctors can prescribe medication for this skin condition.
